ACHIEVEMENTS & SUCCESSES IN 2008
THE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER

- ABLE/Adult Learning Center
The Adult Basic Literacy Education Program, funded by Middletown City Schools, provides an opportunity for Oxford-area adults to study and test for their GED. English for Speakers of Other Language classes are also offered for adults who wish to improve their English language skills. 12 students received their GED in 2008
.The Family Resource Center served as an income tax preparation site, working with Legal Aid and volunteers from Miami University. 110 households received a combined total of $98,596 from this program in 2008
Holy Trinity volunteers enrolled 27 clients into the Ohio Benefit Bank.
LifeSpan provides a Family Advocate at the FRC to work with the residents of the Oxford and Miami Mobile Home Parks. This program, funded by a private grant, is working to build community in the mobile home parks, while providing outreach, advocacy and referral services to the residents. The Family Advocate helps residents complete applications for benefits, links them with local services as needed, and makes referrals to other area programs. .The Family Resource Center continued the collaboration started in 2006, and funded by an allocation from United Way of Oxford, Ohio & Vicinity in the annual grant to the FRC. St. Raphael’s provides an Outreach Nurse and a Social Services Case Worker to assist area residents in obtaining medications and with rent and utility assistance. In 2008, the Outreach Nurse and Social Services Case Worker served assisted 63 clients.
FRC volunteers put together and distributed emergency kits to 34 families in the Talawanda School District.
The FRC continued the partnership with SELF, partially funded by the City of Oxford, to maintain the Empower One Program. The Empower One Case Manager helps clients work toward self-sufficiency by encouraging them to set and achieve individual goals. Clients’ goals generally include, but are not limited to, bettering their employment and education. The Empower One Case Manager worked with 67 individual clients in 2008. SELF staff also served 102 FRC clients through the HEAP program in 2008.
MAJOR COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS
- Butler County School Supply Initiative
The FRC collaborated with United Way of Oxford, Ohio and Vicinity, Talawanda Schools, the Miami University Partnership Office and the Oxford Church of God to provide school supplies to low-income Talawanda School District students. Two hundred eight students received school supplies and backpacks through this program.
FRC staff and volunteers, working in collaboration with Wal-Mart, provided $40 gift cards to 407 children from 171 families. This allowed them to choose the Holiday gifts they wanted.
The FRC worked with LifeSpan, PUSH (People United for Self-Help), and Miami student volunteers to clean up and weatherize homes in the Oxford mobile home park. The volunteers helped 24 families in the mobile home park.
Staff and volunteers worked with referral sources and scheduled appointments for the dental clinic. In 2008, 238 appointments were scheduled for Talawanda students.
The FRC collaborated with Miami University and many local agencies and volunteers to recycle furniture and household items left behind by Miami students. In the spring of 2008, families shopped for 377 furniture items that they had requested.
