The United Way of Oxford impacts the lives of over 22,000 annually through its three initiatives and 17 partner agencies who sponsor 25 programs that benefit residents living within the geographic bounds of the Talawanda School District. Our focus on the areas of Education, Income and Health aim to help those in need build better lives for themselves while strengthening the community we call home.

The Family Resource Center provides services to families struggling in the Oxford area. Our jobs program, Oxford Works, provides job training and mentoring and connects people who need jobs to local employers. Our Oxford Community Garden provides fresh produce to local food pantries and gardening education to children during the summer months. Our thrift store recycles local donations that local families can purchase at low cost.  You can read about two of our client stories below.

Valerie – No Longer Homeless

Valerie was widowed in 2012 and began to struggle financially. In 2013, she lost her job and became homeless after her vehicle was repossessed. Valerie came to the Family Resource Center in January 2014 for help.  A few weeks later, Valerie was connected with two local employers through the Oxford Works program. She started work with one of the employers in February, and the other a few months later. Valerie has now moved into her own apartment, and is optimistic that one of her part-time positions will lead to full-time employment with benefits in the year ahead.

Joe and His Dream Job

When Joe entered Oxford Works in 2013, he was determined to change the pattern of job loss and instability that he had been experiencing since a difficult divorce and the economic recession. Joe was an excellent student of the lessons taught in Oxford Works and committed to the idea of a full-time job search. After nearly a year of working temp jobs to make ends meet, Joe finally got the call he had been waiting for; Miami University offered him a full-time permanent position with benefits. Joe is no longer receiving food stamps; he owns a mobile home and a vehicle; he is earning retirement and healthcare, and paying off his student loans.
